Dr Daniel W. Ichang'i - Chairman, Council of the Association of Professional Societies in East Africa (APSEA)

Dr. Daniel W. Ichang'i born on the 9th of November in 1955, is a Registered Geologist and a Senior Lecturer in Department of Geology, University of Nairobi. Dr. Ichang'i graduated with a B.Sc. (First Class Honours) Degree in Geology and Chemistry in 1979 and a M.Sc. Degree in Economic Geology in 1984 from the University of Nairobi. He then obtained his Ph.D. Degree in the field of Economic Geology in 1991 from McGill University. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of Kenya (FGSK) and a past Chairman of the Geological Society of Kenya and has served on the Geologists Registration Board (GRB). He was also a member of the Government of Kenya Task Force on Delineation of Kenya's Outer Continental Shelf under the Office of the President, Kenya, representing the University of Nairobi. He is a believer and practicing Christian, and a member of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (P.C.E.A.). He is married and a father of adult children.

 

Core Professional, Academic and Research Interests

  • Economic Geology, stratigraphy and geochemistry of Archean Cratons with emphasis on the East African (Tanzanian) Craton. Gold, massive sulphide and diamond mineralisation in the Nyanza greenstone belt of western Kenya.
  • Geology, geochemistry and economic mineral potential of the Migori segment including the Migori Gold Belt. Potential for similar mineralisation in adjacent regions of the high grade Proterozoic mobile belts surrounding the East African (Tanzanian) Craton with special reference to the Mozambique Mobile Belt.
  • Copper-Lead-Zinc-Silver mineralisation in the Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks on the Kenya Coast, in Eastern Kenya and elsewhere in the country.
  • Mineralogy, geochemistry and potential of precious, base and "high technology" groups of metals in Tertiary/Neogene rocks and epithermal precipitates of active geothermal areas in Kenya.
  • Geology of gemstones, industrial rocks and minerals in Eastern Africa.
  • Geology of Kenya Basins and Kenya’s inner and outer continental shelf areas and implications on potential for oil, gas, coal, uranium, geothermal and other energy resources.
  • Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and Delineation of Kenya’s Outer Continental Shelf Area beyond 200 Nautical Miles.
  • Hydrogeology and groundwater resources of various geological terranes in Kenya.
  • Environmental disaster assessment and management in Kenya with special emphasis on landslides in Central Kenya.
